How to recognize a LEGO® part number (Design ID vs. Element ID)

The Design ID identifies the part’s shape (e.g., 3001 for a 2×4 brick), while the Element ID indicates the specific shape and color variant. You can find these numbers on the bottom of the part or in the set instructions. Searching by these numbers yields the most accurate results.
